FILMMAKER STATEMENT

My documentary film is a deep journey at the center of the life and the art of Paul Sharits, through study of his work, his process, through rare archival footage and home movies, all articulated by fascinating deeply moving exclusive interviews with people who shared his life, family, friends, students, archivists, film theorists and fellow filmmakers.
I have the privileged point of view to be an experimental filmmaker myself having created them for the last 25 years +. As I am making this film, I believe this enables me to relate and admire the very essence and fabric that made Paul Sharits such legendary filmmaker and ground breaking visual artist, one of the most singular, enigmatic, unique and important figure of the American Avant Garde. Plagued by unusual adversity, indomitable, he kept on, creating masterworks that are shown and exhibited all over the world.
This film aims to share the struggle of the artist and to bring him the much deserved additional recognition that belongs to him for a deeper human understanding of the experimental filmmaking process and some of the mental anguish often lodged within it.
This film will be of tremendous interest for anyone who has been touched by Art, whatever it may be, up close and faraway, whether they know it or not, whether they are tortured souls or not.
